Lake Erie Wineries

The Lake Erie wineries are the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies, stretching 40 miles to North East, Pennsylvania. Grape and wine cultivation dates back to the area’s geological development on Lake Erie’s southern side. During the Ice Age, huge tunnels were carved out by glaciers falling from the north, bringing massive amounts of Canadian soil, rocks, and boulders.

The glaciers retreated as the temperature warmed, filling the trenches with glacial melt and producing the Great Lakes, leaving behind ridges of soil and shingle along the Lake Erie shore.

Lake Erie wineries-The specialty

With approximately 40,000 acres of grapevines, the area surrounding the south coast of Lake Erie is one of the greatest grape-growing locations in the United States. The vast majority of them (think Welch’s) are edible or drinkable. New European varietals, on the other hand, have been introduced in the last 50 years, offering local winemakers more options.

A region that formerly centered almost solely on Niagara, Catawba, and other sweet grapes (and hence, sweet wines) now contains Chardonnay, Vignoles, Merlot, and Blaufrankisch, a red grape we had the opportunity to experience on our travels through Austria and Prague.

The Best of Lake Erie wineries.

These various grapes have found homes in the roughly 20 wineries that now line a 40-mile stretch of Lake Erie’s south side. Some specialize in fruit wines, sweet wines, and specialty wines like ice wine, while others broaden their range to include refined drier whites and reds. Whatever your preferences, Erie’s vineyards are likely to have something that you’ll appreciate. Spend a weekend, as we did, exploring and discovering your favorite.

South Shore Wine Company
South Shore Wine Company

The South Shore Wine Company is Erie’s oldest winery. The 1860s-era French-style subterranean wine grotto was part of Erie’s first commercial winery, which operated during and after the Civil War.

The wine cellar sat empty when Prohibition ended until the Mazza family revived it in 2007 with its original name. The family meticulously repaired the old stone masonry, attempting to stay as true to the original design as possible. The winery appears nearly the same as it did 150 years ago, with the exception of a rebuilt entrance and a tasting bar — a great location in which to drink some well prepared wine.

South Shore Wine Company is one of the Mazza family’s three wineries, however the majority of the wines served here are exclusive to this tasting room. They have over 20 wines to choose from, ranging from dry reds to semi-sweet whites, as well as fruit and speciality wines. In a region where sweeter types are favored, their dry varietals and mixes stand out as some of the best. During the summer, there is also a café upstairs that sells paninis, salads, and other light meals.

Tips:

  • Gruner Veltliner and unwooded Chardonnay are two excellent choices.

Location

  • 1120 Freeport Rd. (Route 89) in North East, Pennsylvania.

Arrowhead Wine Cellars

Arrowhead Wine Cellars
Arrowhead Wine Cellars

Nick and Kathy Mobilia, proprietors of Arrowhead Wine Cellars, have been creating wine from grapes and fruit cultivated on their 250-acre farm since 1998. They cultivate Pinot Grigio and Riesling from Europe, as well as Niagara, Catawba, and Concord grapes from the United States. This allows them to produce and bottle a wide range of wines, from typical dry to semi-sweet and sweet. They also make fruit wines (without the grapes) that include client favorites like blueberry wine and apple wine.

Arrowhead Wine Cellars also creates a unique line of fruit drinks, which pays respect to the Native Americans who first colonized the area. Their range of three grape juices, as well as cherry and apple alternatives, are treated similarly to their wines, but the juices are never fermented, making them a wonderful non-alcoholic beverage option. Arrowhead also sells wine accessories, seasonal products, cuisine, and clothing in addition to the wines and juices.
